Why your air conditioner smells bad, and how to fix it

Before you touch the unit
Some odours are safe for you to investigate yourself, others are not. A musty smell after a long summer of daily use is a normal maintenance job. A burning or electrical smell is a stop-everything moment. Before opening any panel, switch the AC off at the wall and give it a few minutes to power down. Have a torch, gloves and a soft cloth ready, and never spray water near any electrical component.
